Meet the Editors: Maya Carlson
By Nicole Bradshaw
Maya Carlson is a senior Writing major with minors in Psychology and Linguistics and currently serves as our Senior Fiction Editor. She entered Ithaca College in the Exploratory program, heavily considered psychology, but through the encouragement of her Academic Writing Professor, Megan Graham, she dedicated herself to writing. That passion mostly lies in fiction writing, and absolutely doesn’t lie in academic or argument writing, which are the banes of Maya’s existence. Similarly to her experience with writing, Professor James Pfrehm inspired her to pursue linguistics beyond one class.
In middle school, Maya wrote over 100 pages of a science fiction story. She is proud of the determination and commitment she had in back then, even if rereading that work now makes her cringe. She may never complete that work, but she admires her 14-year-old self for making that wonderful terrible thing.
Maya has dabbled in many areas of fiction, including fantasy, science fiction, young adult, children’s literature, and everything in-between and beyond. For Maya, there are infinite approaches to fiction. She likes playing video games to see world’s others have created in a visual medium, with maps and vivid lore. Dragons are a particular fascination for Maya, in all mediums.
One day Maya would love to move to England. Ever the escapist, she hopes a change of scenery and culture will give her something new to explore, both on the page and off. Even if she uses her writing for more practical purposes, like technical writing and to further cultivate her organizational skills, she loves the limitless possibilities that fiction provides.
